Erythritol is an artificial sweetener. It is one of the best low intensity sugar replacer in the world. Recently erythritol has been approved by the EU for use in food. Erythritol is produced via fermentation and the end product does not only taste like sugar, but it also looks like sugar. 

Erythritol can be used to substitute sugar and thus reduce caloric values and improve dental health. It's certainly one of the best available polyols for the food branch and certainly the only natural polyol. Other advantages are synergetic effects when combined with artificial sweeteners. Combining high intensity sweeteners with Erythritol will also give a masking effect on the bitterness.

Currently the usage of Erythritol in the EU is prohibited for use in beverages. For goods with a level of erythritol above 10% there should be a warning on the package indicating that consumption could give a laxative effect.  Nevertheless this effect is the smallest of all polyols. In other countries in the world like for example Japan, the use in food applications is already unrestricted.
